[MC Mini] Power Options FAQ
Power Options FAQ of MC Mini
WHICH IS FASTER, WIRELESS CHARGING OR USB CHARGING?
Wireless charging is a relatively new technology, and as the charging is taking place using electromagnetic conduction, it is not as efficient as a direct link USB charging cable. The 5V/2A chargers on the MC 12- Light Kit will charge your devices more quickly, with an estimate of roughly 2 hours compared to 3.5 hours. That being said, the wireless charging pads are built for convenience and sleek design and remove the hassle of dealing with many unruly cables.
CAN I POWER THE MCS VIA USB-C POWER? CAN I CHARGE AND POWER THE MCS AT THE SAME TIME? WHY DOES THE MAX OUTPUT DECREASE WHEN PLUGGED IN?
When the MC is plugged into USB power, it will automatically revert to the USB as its primary power source, bypassing the internal battery. The MC can be powered up to 100% output with a 5V/2A and high quality and short USB-C Cable. If it is not able to reach 100%, then the power supply is not providing enough wattage. Most computer USB ports output a max of 0.5A at 5V, which is equal to 2.5W, and is not sufficient. The standard USB-A iPhone charging brick for example, has inadequate power delivery and the MC does not receive enough power, so it outputs a max of 0%. If the MC is not receiving enough power it will start to decrease its max output in 20% increments (100, 80, 60, 40, 20, 0). We recommend 5V/2A chargers or a 9V/2A 18W PD charger for the MC. Those are both good specs for MC power supplies. Anything lower than that and you will begin to lose output. Your cable matters as well. The longer the cable is, the more line loss there is. The quality of your cable can also affect line loss. For a 5V/2A charger (depending on your cable) the MC can be powered by AC power and also SIMULTANEOUSLY charge the battery when the light is under 40%. With a PD charger, the light may be able to increase its output while still charging, depending on the cable and heat.
