[Education] Basic vs. Control Channel DMX Profiles

The difference between Basic and Control Channel DMX profile families on STORM and NOVA fixtures, and which to patch.

Aputure OS II fixtures (STORM and NOVA series) organize their DMX profiles into three families: Basic DMX Profiles, Control Channel DMX Profiles, and Color Space DMX Profiles. The most common decision when patching a fixture is choosing between the first two.

Basic DMX Profiles

Basic profiles include only the channels needed to set the light's output: Intensity, CCT, ±Green, RGB, HSI, xy, and similar color channels depending on the profile. Nothing else. They use the fewest channels, which matters when patching large universes or many fixtures on one run.

Control Channel DMX Profiles

Control Channel profiles carry a "& Control" suffix in their name and include everything a Basic profile has, plus three additional channels:

  • Strobe – strobe the fixture in whatever color is currently set
  • Control – the DMX Control Channel, for remote commands like Sidus BT, CRMX, RDM, DMX Smoothing, and Signal Flash
  • Fan – direct control over fan speed/behavior (the fixture's System settings must have Fan Mode set to DMX Controlled)

Same color math, same channel layout for intensity and color, just three more channels of access layered on top.

Which Should You Patch?

It's a straightforward tradeoff:

  • Patch Basic when you want the tightest channel footprint and don't need strobe, fan, or remote command access from the console.
  • Patch Control Channel when you want strobe, fan control, or the ability to change fixture settings (CRMX, RDM, Signal Flash, dim curve, and more) without touching the light.

Both families share the same color-mixing channels, so switching between them later doesn't change how you program intensity or color, only whether the extra three channels are present. On STORM, both families also have an Individual Emitter counterpart, for direct per-emitter color control instead of blended CCT/HSI/xy.
